VR-technology in physiotherapy treatment

Description

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation service provides care for individuals experiencing disability secondary to medical or traumatic conditions, regardless of their underlying cause or the patient’s age. This includes the rehabilitation of motor, cognitive, bladder and bowel, and cardiorespiratory functions, with the aim of restoring each patient’s maximum functional capacity.

To support rehabilitation and occupational therapy, professionals within the service use augmented reality (AR) devices that enable patients to engage in immersive therapy sessions conducted within the facility’s gymnasium. This approach has been associated with improved treatment adherence and effectiveness.

Specifically, AR glasses are used in conjunction with both commercially available software and custom-designed programmes developed by medical staff within the service. Rehabilitation physicians prescribe the appropriate video content for each patient, which is then administered by physiotherapists and occupational therapists, who assist patients throughout the session. These tailored videos are created in-house by clinicians using various immersive reality software tools.
