Cloud-based management software for biobank
Description
Biobank activities are primarily managed through an external digital application that supports the administration and retrieval of biological samples. This tool enables the complete tracking of samples, from their arrival at the biobank to their eventual allocation to researchers. Biobank managers use the application to design storage configurations, establish sample collections, define procedural protocols, and retrieve samples based on a range of criteria. Technical staff use the system to log samples upon physical receipt and maintain associated data records. Researchers and clinicians are also able to update their collections, initially configured by biobank managers and complete relevant data entries.
A core function of the biobank is the utilisation of stored samples and their associated data. Researchers or clinicians submit requests to the biobank management team, who then use the system’s search functionalities to identify relevant samples according to defined parameters. The resulting information is manually compiled into catalogues and shared with the requestor.
With support from national biomedical infrastructure funding, the biobank has expanded its service portfolio to include the development of biomodels such as patient-derived xenografts (PDXs), organoids, and cell lines, alongside preclinical trial development. The coordination of these activities requires collaboration across a multidisciplinary team, collection of patient clinical data, histological verification of tumours, and detailed tracking of data linked to each generated biomodel.
