VR-technology in physiotherapy treatment

Description

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation service of the Ramón y Cajal Hospital deals with disability secondary to medical and traumatic conditions, whatever their aetiology and whatever the age of the patients, in the field of motor, cognitive, vesico-sphincteric and cardiorespiratory functions, aiming to recover their maximum functional level.

To carry out rehabilitation and occupational therapies, the service’s professionals use augmented reality devices that allow patients to carry out immersive sessions in the hospital’s own gymnasium, with greater adherence and effectiveness of the treatment. More specifically, augmented reality glasses are used with commercial software or software specifically designed by doctors from the service. The type of videos to be displayed is prescribed by the rehabilitation doctors and physiotherapists and occupational therapists place the glasses with the prescribed videos on the patients and help them during the session. The ad-hoc videos are created by the doctors themselves using different immersive reality software applications.
